Hi everyone. It’s been a busy couple of months! Since I’ve updated you I have – quit my job, found a new house in the country to live in, attended a writing event where I won a prize to have some of my work reviewed by an agent, had my work reviewed by said agent, smashed my hand against my forehead and then rewrote some of my novel with the help of that feedback, and drunk my body weight in hot chocolate.
Phew. Like I said, It’s been a busy time.
My partner and I have been talking for some time about moving to the New Forest in England. We have family down there, it’s close to the ocean (oh, I do love the ocean) but it’s still full of many, many, many trees for walks and generally enjoying the wildlife. We couldn’t commute to our current jobs from there so we needed new jobs before we could make the move. So we waited, and applied, and waited… and then my partner got a job in the perfect area in a position which he thinks he will enjoy. Hooray! I’ve got enough savings that we decided that we would just jump now and I can get a new job next year doing, something. I’m not sure yet as there are lots of different options going around in my head so I’m going to wait and see how everything pans out. It’s all very exciting.
The picture above is of me playing on the swing in the back garden of the house that we have applied for and hopefully will be moving into late next month/early December. It’s an old lodge on an estate with a grand house at the end of a driveway (about 1/4 mile away from our house). We share the same driveway but it’s got it’s own garden surrounded by a hedge for privacy and has sheep on the other side of the hedge. It has a lovely blue door, a kitchen twice the size of our current one and an open fire in the loungeroom. Can you tell that I’m excited?!
At the moment I’m working out my notice for my current job (which although is scary to quit when you don’t have something immediately to jump into, is truly freeing as I’ve had far too much unhappiness from that place), trying to clear out and start to pack for the move, and madly writing my novel. I haven’t finished my first draft yet as life has been filling my time with other things, but I am getting close and it’s getting better with the help I received from the agent Sarah O’Halloran who I won a review with as part of the SCBWI event that I attended at Foyles Bookshop last month. It was an interesting night listening to literary agents and other writers chat about their work and the industry and it was made even better by winning a prize. Sarah was very helpful and although deep down in my ego I was hoping that she would go ‘oh my god, It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen, it’s perfect as it is,’ I knew I it wasn’t there yet but her advice and pointers should help me get me closer to it being publishable.
How about you? What are the headlines from your life at the moment?
